The question that frames this journal

Is uniqueness the only value we have?

“In a world where AI can do almost everything, what will people value us for?”Client brief, Ryokan Senpokaku, Toba

My finding along the way: we designed a principle we didn’t practise.

MY QUESTION

Is uniqueness the only value we have?

Each chapter tests it from a different angle.

Personal AI Policy · amended 4 October 2026

AI drafts.
People decide.

I take the principle we designed for the client and finally apply it to myself: AI backstage, people frontstage.

My principles

  1. My perspective comes firstI form my own view, research and idea before I open an AI tool. Otherwise the result is only AI.
  2. People discuss before anyone prompts or votesDisagreements are argued out by the team first. AI and voting tools can inform a decision, never settle it for us.
  3. AI drafts, people decideAI can sort, summarise, draft and build. The judgement, the choice and the responsibility stay with us.
  4. Verify before it reaches a clientEvery number, quote and source is checked against the original. AI-researched claims are not cited until I have found the primary source.
  5. Ethics and law are part of the designWhen I design with AI, consent, what is stored, for how long, who can access it and the local legal framework are part of the concept and of the presentation, not a risk to hide.
  6. No personal details in an LLMI don’t enter my own or other people’s personal details. Teammates, guests and clients are anonymised first.
  7. Protect what is uniquely oursAI tends towards the most probable answer. The improbable recombination, the better line, the better visual and the debate about them stay human.
  8. A team AI agreement at every kick-offBefore a project starts, we agree together where and how we use AI, and who checks what.
  9. Declare it specificallyI name what AI did, where, and what I changed or overrode. A generic statement is not a declaration.

When I use AI, and when I don’t

Yes

  • Structuring my notes and sources
  • First drafts I will rewrite
  • Prototyping and building, like this site
  • Checking my argument for gaps

Not without people first

  • Settling a team disagreement
  • Choosing the idea we present
  • Numbers and facts for a client, unverified
  • Anything with personal data

What changed in this module

I used AI to build most of our client presentation and, as a team, to settle disagreements. It was fast and peaceful, and nobody owned the decisions. I also shared teammates’ names and feedback with an LLM while preparing this Research Activity, against Hyper Island’s guidance. Principles 2, 6 and 8 are new because of this.
